1999:
LWZ Information: Avalanche Galtür / Valzur - Tirol
During the avalanche disaster in Galtür and Valzur (Ischgl), digital Information provided by tiris was used at the rescue coordination headquarter in Landeck Phase I - 23. and 24. February 1999 The first and biggest avalanche struck to Galtür on Thuesday 23rd of Februar, shortly after 16.00. Residents managed to dig out about 20 people, but 31 more were still buried as night fell. No outside help has reached Galtuer, because earlier avalanches had blocked the main road and bad weather prevented helicopters from flying in. Only one hour later, digital data from tiris were used to help the coordination office. What happened and when is described at page Phase I - 23. and 24. February 1999. Phase II - 25. February 1999 A new deadly avalanche smashed into Valzur between Galtür and Ischgl. Valzur was reached within a few hours by a specialist rescue team of around 150 people, and two people were rescued quickly, but 7 people died. From this stage, tiris headoffice in Innsbruck produced overview maps (scale 1:50.000) and detail maps (1:2.000 and 1:5.000) not only for Galtür and Valzur. Maps were produced for the whole district of Landeck and provided to the coordination headquarter in Landeck via Internet.
