Herwig van Staa meets the President of Georgia [22/01/2013 18:30:00] During the official visit by Mikheil Saakashvili, President of Georgia, to the Council of Europe, in the context of the Parliamentary Assembly, Herwig van Staa, President of the Congress, had the opportunity to inform him of the progress made in monitoring local and regional democracy in Georgia. Mr van Staa expressed his concern with regard to the allegations of pressure exerted on a number of Georgian mayors following the parliamentary elections on 1 October 2012. The President of the Congress also informed Mikheil Saakachvili that the Congress might make a fact-finding mission to Georgia during the first quarter of 2013 to examine the situation.
