EU Strategy for the Alpine region
The voice of the Alpine region in the EU
Due to its unique nature and geography, the Alpine region is especially affected by climate change, natural hazards, demographic shifts and the negative impacts of transport & traffic. At the same time, economic globalisation demands consistently high competitiveness and innovation capacity.
To address these challenges through joint initiatives and projects, the seven Alpine states – France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Slovenia – together with their 48 provinces, Länder, cantons and regions and a total population of 80 million, have joined forces under the EU Strategy for the Alpine region (EUSALP).
The Communication and Action Plans for the EU Strategy for the Alpine region were officially adopted by the European Commission on 28 July 2015 and by the European Council on 28 June 2016. Thematically, the strategy focuses on three main priorities:
- Competitiveness and innovation
- Environmentally-friendly mobility and connectivity
- Sustainable management of energy, natural and cultural resources
States, regions and the EU collaborate across all governance levels in nine thematic action groups to develop concrete projects. Tyrol, together with the European Region Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino, co-leads Action Group 4 on mobility in the Alpine region and is also involved in the groups working on labour markets and education, natural resources, natural hazard management and energy. Furthermore, Tyrol emphasises long-term youth involvement, promoting it through a range of projects and participation opportunities.
