This year, the “Europe Direct Movie Night”, organised by Europe Direct Tyrol and the Region of Tyrol, is being held for the third time as part of various activities surrounding Europe Day on 9 May.

The film “A Simple Accident” by Iranian director Jafar Panahi, which was nominated in 2026 for two Academy Awards and Golden Globes and won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2025 along with other awards, was one of the five films nominated for the 2026 LUX Audience Award.

The LUX Audience Award has been presented since 2020 by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, in cooperation with the European Commission and the Europa Cinemas network. It was first launched in 2007 by the European Parliament; this year’s award ceremony took place on 14 April 2026 in Brussels. The aim of the “LUX Prize” is to promote the diversity of European cinema. It focuses on films that make social issues accessible to a broad audience, with a clear connection to EU values, and that encourage dialogue on these topics.

With the Europe Direct Movie Night, Europe Direct and the Region of Tyrol aim, among other things, to highlight through the medium of film how important shared European values such as the rule of law, freedom of expression, and human rights are for our society. In light of ongoing conflicts and their consequences, the EU – still the largest peace project – is facing numerous challenges. These must be addressed together, based on strong, shared values.
